A woman in bloom

Melissa is an artist and an aspiring midwife in Whitehorse, Yukon. She will be presenting an art show at the Victoria Faulkner Women's Centre later this month.

June 28th at 7pm Art Open House
"Body Landscapes" by Melissa Valja

An exploration of meanings we place on our bodies and our land, through black & white and colour photography. The images are from Northern Ontario, Toronto, and Old Crow. Melissa Valja is an artist who likes to explore the interconnection between the way we treat the Earth and the way we treat our bodies.

Join us for an art party with food and fun and creativity.

Actually, blooming is something which happens before fertilization.

A beautiful photo. I'd go to the event if it wasn't exclusionary.

Haha, cute! I guess that's one difference between flowers and humans. But when a woman has a "blossoming belly" before she gets pregnant, she's generally not so happy about it!

As for the art show, I just called the Women's Centre for clarification and you're right, Andrew, that it is going to be for women only because the Women's Centre space is for women only. That's something I actually wasn't aware of.

We'll have to get Melissa to see if she can do another art show at a more public venue down the road.
